“The Poodle Boys at the Zoo” – Vintage Gibbs Dentifrice Comic Advert, c.1910s
£20.00
Description
Description:
This charming and humorous vintage advertisement titled “The Poodle Boys at the Zoo” was created to promote Gibbs Dentifrice, a popular toothpaste of the early 20th century. The advert combines a whimsical comic strip featuring anthropomorphic poodles in tartan shorts visiting the zoo, with a light-hearted dental hygiene message. The poodles, amazed by a crocodile’s teeth, liken them to “Ivory Castles” and are inspired to brush their own after their amusing zoo encounter.
Dated circa 1910s to early 1920s, this advert reflects the Edwardian/early interwar era’s unique blend of humor, art, and health-conscious marketing. The artwork style and narrative approach were typical of illustrated adverts found in British magazines and newspapers of the time. While the artist is not credited, the style is in line with period advertising art, often used by Gibbs Ltd., a London-based brand known for Cold Cream Soap and dental products.
This rare advertisement has been mounted on black cardboard and measures approximately 12 x 15 cm (4.7 x 5.9 inches). It is a delightful example of early illustrated advertising and ideal for collectors of vintage ephemera, antique advertising, or canine-themed art.
Condition Note:
Please note that this is an original vintage advert and may show signs of age such as slight yellowing, paper patina, or faint edge wear. These features are part of its authentic charm and historical value.
