1940 Vintage Punch Magazine Cartoon – “The Ready Giver” by E.H. Shepard

Description:
This original 1940 Punch Magazine cartoon, titled “The Ready Giver”, is drawn by the brilliant British illustrator E.H. Shepard, known both for his endearing children’s book art (Winnie the Pooh, The Wind in the Willows) and his incisive political satire.

Beautifully mounted on black cardboard, the print measures approximately 23.5 x 18 cm.

In this wartime cartoon, a gentleman burdened with war materials and entering “The Labels” gate (marked “Prepared for Another Battle”) speaks to the Chancellor of the Exchequer holding a box labeled “Budget”. The caption reads:
“My hands are rather full, but you will find my cheque-book in my right-hand breast pocket.”
This satirical piece critiques the heavy demands placed on the British public during the war, highlighting the strained resources and unrelenting expectations of financial contribution, despite physical and economic exhaustion.

Condition Note:
As a genuine print from 1940, this item may exhibit natural aging characteristics such as slight yellowing, mild foxing, or soft edges. These features only enhance its authenticity and historic value.

Perfect for collectors of wartime British cartoons, Punch magazine history, or vintage economic and social commentary.
