1940 Vintage Punch Magazine Cartoon – “There’s Never Any News at One” by Fougasse
Description:
This original 1940 cartoon from Punch Magazine, titled “There’s Never Any News at One”, is the work of famed British cartoonist Fougasse (pseudonym of Cyril Kenneth Bird). Known for his simple, clever style and wartime humor, Fougasse delivers a wonderfully subtle satire on British domestic life during the war.
This authentic cartoon has been mounted on black cardboard and measures approximately 23.5 x 18 cm.
In twelve comic panels, a stylized radio begins each line with a classic broadcast phrase like “It is announced that…” or “It is now known that…”, but each announcement is promptly and hilariously interrupted by casual domestic chatter. The final panel reads:
“And that is the end of the news… Ah, at last we can relax and talk.”
Poking gentle fun at British politeness and the distractions of daily life, the cartoon captures the humor and rhythm of wartime Britain—where even the national news struggled to compete with small talk and social habits.
Condition Note:
This vintage print is now over 80 years old and may display signs of natural aging such as mild yellowing, slight foxing, or gentle edge wear. These traits only add to the authenticity and character of this original artwork.
Ideal for collectors of WWII home front humor, British social satire, or classic Punch magazine cartoons.
