1940 Vintage Punch Magazine Cartoon – “Fore!” by E.H. Shepard

Description:
This witty 1940 cartoon from Punch Magazine, titled “Fore!”, is illustrated by the acclaimed British artist E.H. Shepard—celebrated for both his iconic children’s book illustrations and sharp political cartoons.

Professionally mounted on black cardboard, the print measures approximately 23.5 x 18 cm.

In this humorous wartime scene, two golfers stand on the 18th green, visibly frustrated as a large tractor rumbles past, ploughing up their precious course. One holds a flag marked “18,” while the caption at the bottom reads:
“[It has been suggested that more of our golf links, especially near London, could be put under cultivation.]”
This cartoon sharply pokes fun at wartime resourcefulness, particularly the “Dig for Victory” campaign, in which ornamental land—including golf courses—was considered for agricultural repurposing to help combat food shortages in World War II Britain.

Condition Note:
This original vintage cartoon is over 80 years old and may display light signs of aging such as minor foxing, yellowing, or soft edges. These only enhance its authenticity and nostalgic value.

An excellent addition for collectors of WWII home front satire, British agricultural history, or Punch Magazine classics.
